The Rainbow Room Kids have started their community helpers theme with the first focus being on the Fire Person. The kids have played with homemade fire extinguishers in housekeeping and put out fires in the water table, (see photo above). The kids practiced dialing 911 and stop, drop and roll. We had fun today making and, yes, eating firetrucks. We made the fire trucks with graham crackers, icing and used Oreos for the wheels. We will continue learning some simple fire rules like "Stay Low and Go" while we crawl under a sheet. We will end our fire safety week with a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog.
We will be starting our classroom Halloween costumes soon. Please send in a white t-shirt that can be painted for their costume.
We have started reading from our book boxes for our read to self time during library. We are working on reading by looking at the pictures, staying in one spot, and reading the whole time. We are now reading for two minutes while we learn to build our STAMINA. Our goal is to have the children read by themselves for 10 minutes by the end of the year.
Thank you to those who attended Back to School Night. It was nice to get together in a classroom setting and being able finish our sentences without being interrupted by the little ones. Please feel free to visit the classroom at any time. Come in to read a book or even bring in a special snack. Ms. Susan

All About Me
The All About Me theme, provides children with the opportunity to answer the all-important question "Who Am I?" We have spent the last two weeks listening to songs and poems about "special me". The Rainbow kids got to know Ms. Susan and Ms. Annarose by hearing about what's special to them. Some of our favorite activities have been writing our names in salt and making finger print cookies. This week we have been exploring the 5 senses. In the science center, the rainbow scientists conducted taste tests when learning about their sense of taste. We tested foods that were sweet, sour and salty. I was surprised to learn that a few children love the sour taste of lemons. We will be wrapping up our monthly All About Me theme by learning about our family. The classroom routines are coming into place. The children are getting to learn how to move to different learning centers by using clips to know when a center is open. The children have enjoyed being Leader of the Day. The Leader of the Day is the teacher's helper for the day and has show and tell the next day. Look for a certificate reminder that your child has show and tell the following day.

Welcome Rainbow Room Class of 2012
Welcome to the Rainbow Room Blog. My purpose for this blog is to provide another way to communicate with parents and family members the highlights we have shared with your children. One of my reference books I like for this age group is from a series of books by child psychologists, on developmental stages. The book for the 4 year old is entitled Your Four Year Old, Wild and Wonderful. I see this year as the year the child goes from being an introverted child to exploring relationships with their peers and developing their sense of self It's an amazing time and I thank you for allowing me to share in these moments with your child. We will encourage your child to participate in learning activities that are fun and interactive. The children will develop sustained silent reading skills that will establish early literacy habits. Please feel free to post your comments and suggestions. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at back to school night on September 27, at 6:45pm.
